“There is a contract with every cigarette” I hear from my tv, as I catch the end of an Real Cost commercial while looking out of my window catching of my mom smoking a cigarette as she waters the flowers. Cigarettes have been around for generation. Just like everything else the old goes out and in comes the new. This has finally applied to cigarettes as modern technology found its replacement. Cigarettes are now being replaced by the new sensations of electronic cigarettes and personal vaporizers. With technology making advances along side with the science and medical field, is the breakthrough with e-Cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) and vape pens (personal vaporizers) just as bad for the body as cigarettes or worse? The first replacement to take off with society, the media, and the public are the electronic cigarettes- or e-Cigarettes for short. E-Cigarettes were made to help prevent people from smoking cigarettes. The only question is: did society rush this technology to the general public? According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “E-Cigarettes have not been fully studied.” Sure e-Cigarettes are tobacco free because it holds water vapor that contains a little bit of the chemical nicotine and some flavoring. But, are they just as bad for you as cigarettes are with the symptoms/ side effects? The answer to this is that no one really knows. Some “Adverse Event Report for e-Cigarettes” includes “pneumonia, congestive heart failure, disorientation, seizure, hypotension, and other health problems” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). This so far are the only symptoms/ side effects of e-Cigarettes that people have put in for their “adverse event” feedback to the government. With this being said “an adverse event is an undesirable side effect or unexpected health or product quality problem that an individual believes was caused by the use of a tobacco product” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). Looking back at this definition, one would see the words “an individual believes” that would tell one that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not really know the causes for these people “unexpected health issues” with e-Cigarettes. That also means that these symptoms/ side effects may not be the only symptoms/ side effects to e-cigarettes, or not at all. Still you can buy e-Cigarettes practically anywhere in different brands (such as Blue). “Only e-Cigarettes that are marketed for therapeutic purposes are currently regulated by the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).
