The Danger Of One Story Analysis

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “The Danger of One Story,” inspired me to write an essay on how I had only “One story” about my home country, Palestine. Adichie said in her story, “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.” That quote from her presentation really changed my way of viewing things.
I’ve only heard “One story” about my home country of Palestine: a war zone. Born in Palestine, but raised in the United States, I’ve watched the news where I saw children get killed and houses get burned down. That “One story” had me frightened to go back and see my home country. In the summer of 2016, my parents decided to

Entering the house was so fulfilling. I saw so many smiles, I felt the joy in the air, and I heard people saying, “We haven’t seen you in so many years!” My family overseas loves to cook; I saw so many types of food laid out on the table. I hadn’t had a home-cooked meal in days. After we were done eating, my grandfather took my siblings and I to their land. Their land is part of a mountain, it brought back so many old memories. The road there was very rocky. I saw so many olive trees and people walking. It was so beautiful. Everyone looked so happy. This made me realize people who live in my home country are living a regular lifestyle and just enjoying their lives. I assumed they were just oppressed; I was ignorant. My grandfather was telling us all the stories of area. He showed us an area of the mountain that is a cave and was shaped like a mouth. He also warned us to watch our steps because there were snakes and scorpions, but I haven’t seen any when I was …show more content…
Right after that, I saw groups of men running towards the gunshots. I was like, “They are so stupid; they are going to get killed!” but my family that lives there said, “That’s heroic, they are risking their lives to get them out the area.” I was scared, but also interested. My siblings and I ran up to the roof, hid in a safe spot, and started to watch. We barely saw anything because it was dark. I saw smoke in the air, it smelled like gunpowder and I heard gunshots and men yelling. After a while, everything calmed down; no one was hurt. I asked my grandparents if this was normal and they said, “Yes, it usually happens when soldiers walk on Palestinian

In every conflict, there are multiple perspectives that come together to make the whole story. These narratives are rarely equally represented in media and pop culture, but that does not make any perspective less important or valid than another. In reality, the integration of these narratives comes closest to showing the ‘truth’ of situations. Voices Across the Divide, a documentary directed by Alice Rothchild, seeks to give a voice to the Palestinian people, whose narratives are so often underrepresented in the media. It features interviews with Palestinians as well as Dr. Rothchild’s own personal narrative to show different aspects of the Palestinain perspective, as well as to urge its viewers to question the formation and content of their…

Story of an hour essay In the story of the “The story of an hour” there are many types of Irony and that can be found throughout the story. some types of irony are dramatic and situational Irony and an example of dramatic irony is when you know that the wife is not sad but happy and the sister is trying to talk to her through the door thinking that she is sad but we as an audience know that she is wrong and that can be dramatic irony because we know the truth but the sister doesn’t. Another form of Irony is Situational which an example in the story is when They say that the husband is dead and you think that this is true but when he is alive and the wife finds this out the story takes a turn and the wife ends up dying and you thought the husband was dead but really the wife dies and this…

In my artistic work, I decided to pursue and address an issue that stands out to me because of its lack of media representation in America in an era where media is more accessible than ever. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rarely reported in mainstream media in the United States due to its controversial nature. If Americans were better-informed on the subject, then the government’s role in the conflict would become extremely unpopular and fall under societal pressure to stop. It has been remarkable for me to be able to travel, because the injustice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is often a source of great anger and sadness for other countries, while in America, many people do not even know the difference between Israel and Palestine,…

Every now and then I find myself staring into space, reminiscing the past, particularly where I grew up. As I get deep in thought, my senses start to tingle, the very image of my mother standing in the kitchen, the floral scent of her perfume, the roaring oven aided by the thunderous but yet subtle kitchen ventilation that is always on when she is cooking. My mind starts to wander and it takes me to my room, chaotic and unorganized, yet I knew where everything is placed. My clothes were all over the place, it was a habit of mine to dump all my clothes on the floor and my mother was always the one who had to look after my mess. My grandpa’s war movies are still clearly embedded in my memory, he loved to watch documentaries or even propaganda regarding the second sino-Japanese war, my grandpa was a hardcore patriot.…

Palestine and Zionism: The Thin Line between Hatred and Justice In 1947, millions of Palestinians lost their rights to their land. They were wiped off the map, abused in their own homes, and forcibly removed from their country. Children were slaughtered fearlessly, fathers were run over with tanks as they stood guard in front of their homes, and mothers were sexually and mentally assaulted in prisons. A nation once known for its beauty, kindness, and hospitality was entirely destructed and their name was erased from the history books of countries around the world.…

Three years ago I traveled with my colleagues to Israel. My stay was two months in Israel where I had an unforgettable experience. I visited many historic and significant places for myself as a Jew. To realize to this trip we had a requirement and it was that we have no choice to go to the army. The highest risky time I have experienced was during that trip in the army; the first time that I was going to defend a Country, I was on Israel border with Syria, and I carried and used a gun.…

My father pulled into my grandparent’s driveway and put our car in park. I stepped out of the blue Expedition, excited for Thanksgiving. As I walked towards the door in the thirty degree weather to enter my grandparents house, I could see my family conversing and watching T.V. through the windows. I opened the door of the garage which lead into the house. The smell of gasoline filled my nose, but this passed as I quickly walked into the house, greeted by the sight of my family’s shoes spread all around the entrance of the house.…

The intense heat from the mid-summer day and dryness of the air make the tear gas even worse. I can hardly see as my eyes blur and my skin starts to burn from the contact with the gas. The gas fills my lungs and scorches my chest. I eagerly try to suck in air but am met only with suffocation.…
