The Danger Of A Single Story Summary

Decent Essays
In “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Adichie, she states that one reason that single stories less happened on Americans is “because of America’s cultural and economic power.” I agree with this thought by looking at Chinese history. Qing Dynasty government closed shorelines and ports in order to maintain its stable national economy at the end of 18th century. However, this movement did not help increase national finance, instead, interrupted and prevented the development of Chinese economy. The connection and communication between Chinese and other cultures were also cut off. Therefore, China was drew back way behind other countries; the level of economy and technology and the time of being modern society went back hundreds of years.

Image your life turned upside down once your mother had passed away. The book I decided to for my February book report was called The Storyteller by Patricia Reilly Giff and it is historical fiction. In the book the setting is in both modern day time period, and the beginning as well as end of the Revolutionary War. Things aren't so great for a young girl named Elizabeth. Her mother died and her dad is going on a business trip, leaving Elizabeth with her aunt who she hardly knows.…

A few observations that I took from this book include the following: Washington D.C. was built on a landfill, mostly made up of swamp and corpses. The boarding houses for the Congress members sound a lot like houses at Hogwarts. No matter where you are, or what you do, there will always being grouping of people into “us” and “them.”…

Personal Narrative rough draft : Car accident It was early in April of 2016, sunny and beautiful, the day was sure to be full of excitement and energy as student council speeches are due and the final trimester of the year was slowly coming to an end. I woke up that morning to my mother blissfully waking me up with my light turning on and her sweet beautiful voice saying “Wake up, Joey,” I slowly rolled out of bed and stumbled into the shower trying hopelessly to escape the morning and the horrible sensations of waking up early on a Wednesday. As the warm water rushed over me I rehearsed in my head how I would present my student council speech to my teacher. Little did I know how different it would actually be that day.…

In academia, debate continues to rage on between the distinct differences between the disciplines of History and Political Science. The overlaps of the works that each discipline includes and the fluctuations of the way to study each discipline has fueled the debate. This makes it hard to identify the specific distinctions between the two. Jack S. Levy, in Too Important to Leave to Others: History and Political Science in the Study of International Relations, argues that history “Explains the connections between a series of events” while political science shows the “Relationships between variables or classes of events (32)," and that both optimize the use of theory to suit their distinct differences. To go about setting up his argument, Levy brings up the most common agreed upon distinction between history and political science that cotemporary analysts agree on, which is the idiographic and nomothetic distinction.…

The chapter excerpt from Improving Your Storytelling centralizes on the idea of a useful technique to develop a story character by physically embodying and mimicking the character. When becoming your story’s character, there is much more that can be enacted than their physical attributes. Their actions and demeanor are two important contributors to their character, however, there is also the unconsciously acted upon internal sensations. These include the way in which the individual is posed, the way their body tenses, and the identified center of mass in relation to their overall body. All of which can contribute to developing varying characteristics, and can be mimicked by the narrator or teller of the story to represent different portrayals in the prose.…

What is the true meaning of a truly “American” story? The meaning of an American story can vary greatly from person to person. Still, others might have their own definition of an “American” story. To me, one essential element of a truly American story is historical references.…

Murray’s Write to Learn makes perfect sense to me. The concept that “writing produces writing” decribes my approach. If I sit at the computer long enough, I will come up with something. Frost said, “way leads to way” and I’ve founds that one sentence leads to the next. I find myself frustrated as a teacher when students repeatedly say that cannot think of anything to write on a topic.…
