Reputation is a concept that can make or break a man. In Shakespeare’s Othello, the damage that can be caused by reputation, or the lack of it, is very severe and is evident through the characterisation of Michael Cassio. Shakespeare portrays emotional damage that can be caused by the lack of reputation through dialogue “Reputation, reputation, reputation! Oh, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation! ”(2.3.242-244), this statement by Cassio conveys that his reputation is an embodiment of his character and how he identifies himself. Hence, without it, he is truly lost as a person and does not know what is to become of him. The line “I have lost the immortal

A telltale sign of a good story is when one can identify and relate with the characters. Shakespeare is known as one of the absolute best at creating flawed characters that are still worth caring for. It’s difficult to connect with real people and fictional characters alike when they present themselves as flawless, because human beings aren’t perfect and they relate and bond over these imperfections.
