The term paraphilia was created by the Greek roots meaning “to the side of” and philos which means “loving”. Individuals that have a paraphilic disorder have unusual patterns of sexual attraction that involve arousal sexually in response to something they like to engage in. Many paraphilia’s are harmless and victimless. The DSM-5 has a list of abnormal patterns that are looked upon as mental disorders that involve emotional distress. For some individuals engaging in their acts is their only way of achieving sexual arousal. Roughly 50% of paraphiliacs are married and most of these individuals are of European decent. The paraphilic disorders are: exhibitionism, voyeurism, pedophilia, fetishism, transvestism, sexual masochism and sexual sadism.

People who expose themselves are often times not interested in physical sexual contact with their victims. The individual will expose their genitals to individuals by surprise for arousal. The individual will intentionally surprise, shock or try to sexually arouse the person that they are flashing.
