The DREAM Act is a bill which would help illegal immigrants obtain conditional residency by either higher education or active military participation. After successfully completing the former, they have the opportunity to apply for legal permanent resident status. (Conger, 2011)

Many of our current events have given citizens a sense of xenophobia which is the fear of foreigners. (Monteith PhD & Winters, 2010, p.45 ) We have been taught to categorize everyone using the Social Identity Theory by putting the legal citizens in the “us” group and all the immigrants in the “them” group. (Monteith PhD & Winters, 2010, p 45-46. ) Because of acts like 9/11, drug cartels, or gang related incidents we discriminate against the whole group of these people because we assume they must be bad too if they come from the same country. Unfortunately, the racism that was once a huge part of our country has never completely gone away.
