Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944. Commanding this invasion named Operation Overlord was General Dwight D. Eisenhower. There was a lot of planning that led up to the invasion of Normandy. Many different tactics and strategies were introduced during this battle many of which are still studied today.
