When he arrived in Islamabad, Amir was impressed at its prosperity and said that it was the city “Kabul could have become someday” (268). This is both tragic and hopeful because he believed that Kabul had the ability to become prosperous like Islamabad, but in reality, Kabul was slowly destroying itself due to political complications. When Amir woke up after taking pain pills, he was in shock to find Sohrab gone. Sohrab had run away because he wanted to be alone in his thoughts about religion, sex, and violence. When Sohrab allowed Amir to touch him, Amir knew that he was developing a bond with Sohrab. He clearly wanted to adopt him and begin a cycle of honesty to end the cycle of lies and betrayals that three generations had to endure. Later on that day, Amir …show more content…
Faisal, another lawyer, was more optimistic about the adoption, but the best alternative was to temporarily put Sohrab into an orphanage and essentially betray him like his father years ago. Since it was for the greater good, Amir felt that he must do this and when Sohrab knew, he became so terrified and committed suicide when Amir was asleep. When Amir woke up, Sohrab was still in the bathroom and Soraya called with good news. She claimed that she had found a way for Sohrab to get a visa for an easy adoption in America. Amir was ecstatic at the news and went in to inform Sohrab, but unfortunately, he found Sohrab bleeding away to death. “Suddenly [Amir] was on [his] knees, screaming. Screaming through [his] clenched teeth. Screaming until [he] thought [his] throat would rip and [his] chest explode” (305). Amir’s act of redemption would always be incomplete if Sohrab’s attempted suicide succeeded. The weight of Sohrab’s death would immensely increase the weight of guilt on his shoulders.
