Introduction The current state of bullying and harassment in U.S. public schools poses a tremendous threat to the physical and mental health of millions of students nationwide. The resulting harmful effects directly inhibit the ability of students to achieve scholastic success. It is time that this problem is addressed in a meaningful way by our legislators so that the future success of our nation is ensured. Defining exactly what constitutes bullying can be difficult and until recently the federal government had provided no uniform definition of bullying ("Facts about bullying |," 2014). As a result past legislation aimed toward remedying the problem has been unsuccessful. Fortunately, in 2014 the first federal definition of bullying was published by the Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control ("Facts about bullying |," 2014). The definition lays down comprehensive classification giving legislators, educators, law enforcement, and the media the necessary framework to identify acts of bullying. This clearly defined and uniform federal criteria for bullying gave legislators the confidence to revise and reintroduce the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) in 2015. The newly revised SSIA intends to combat this surging epidemic with a number of policy improvements that go far beyond previous efforts to combat bullying and harassment in U.S. public schools.
