The current evangelical church presents a complex variety of worship practices that originated from the development of church history. One of the most remarkable characteristics of Christian worship is traditional liturgies; that is, the order of a church service and its structure. These worship elements could determine if a church has a traditional or contemporary style of worship service. According to the Bible, God must be the center of every form of Christian worship. Furthermore, the current evangelical churches could learn fundamental concepts of worship if they study the history of church and its worship practices.
Traditionally, many current evangelical churches have adopted worship practices based on the Scriptures. The main objective of this paper is to show what the current evangelical church could gain from an historical study of Christian worship. Therefore, this essay will analyze historical worship elements that influenced the evangelical churches through the history, such as the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, Bible preaching, prayer, the visual arts, musical praise, and worship liturgy structures.
