The Current Day Movie Theater They’ve been around for centuries: a place to grab a snack, relax, and watch the latest and greatest films. Movie theaters in the United States date back to as far as the 1800’s (Kramme). Since then, the theater industry has grown up a lot. Some offering over ten movies in the same theater, along with restaurants to dine in before the movie starts. While a lot has changed since the early beginnings of movie theaters, making them better than ever, there is one thing that has been getting worse: the cost. The first disadvantage would be the price of a ticket and the food. “Moviegoers who picked up a ticket in the fourth quarter of 2013 shelled out an average of $8.35, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners" (Hayden). In comparison to what I just recently paid, $11, which is still a lot for only being able to watch the film once. The price of tickets and food are so high in recent years that “fewer Americans go to the movies” says Erich Schwartzel and Ben Fritz of The Wall Street Journal. “America 's moviegoing audience shrank yet again in 2013, and theater owners are considering a radical idea to turn the tide: cutting ticket prices” (Schwartzel). This affect of people not attending the theater may overall benefit what theaters start charging for admissions and food. With the increase of prices of tickets and food, along with the advancements of technologies, the current business model the movie theaters are running with may be their ultimate downfall. New techniques and ideas, including lowering the ticket prices on certain days, may bring back the people who stopped attended (Schwartzel). While I’m not a huge movie theater goer, I would consider attending more often if the prices would decrease. While the theater business does have many advantages going for them at the moment, there are also many disadvantages that may stop previous active movie goers from attending, and instead just watch the film at home when it’s released.
