For starters, I expected The Last Lecture to be all about Randy’s last lecture, how he told it, the entire lecture in detail. It sounded a bit boring, but surprisingly, it wasn’t at all. Actually, a very small portion of it was. This was a good thing to me. The Last Lecture did live up to my expectations. It fulfilled most of my expectations. I expected the novel to be fun and loose. By that, I mean very upbeat and joyful to read, which the novel was indeed. Yes, it did have the tearjerkers, but there were many joyful small stories that were a delight to read. Throughout the book Randy gave a ton of different more complex advice. He referred problems or obstacle as something else. For example, on page seventy-three, Randy states, “The most formidable brick wall I ever came upon in my life was just five feet, six inches tall, and was absolutely beautiful.” Randy referred Jai, his wife, as an obstacle in his lecture. Jai did not want Randy to prepare a last lecture, she wanted him to spend as much time as possible with family. He also stated on page seventy-three, “The brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” I loved how Randy portrayed this. You expect the mystery to be solved, there to be plot twisting endings, crucial evidence and eerie feelings. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” met the expectations and only had one fault. (I’d say that is pretty good!) The author made this novel mysterious and deep. Mark solved the mystery, had major wrenches thrown in his life, found out jaw-dropping evidence and made the eerie feeling grow in your gut. Mark has autism, which makes it harder in life. Mark having autism takes on a whole new perspective, seeing someone operate with a disability is very fascinating. I expected this book to be very different, since there are not very many books that deal with mysteries with dogs. Lots of mystery novels are murder mystery novels. The book was exactly what I hoped it would be, different. I also expected this book to be very dull. I was blown away by the outcome of the book, it was not at all dull. Mark learns so much throughout the journey of solving the mystery, and you end up learning more than you expect. On page one hundred and two Mark states, “And it means that sometimes a whole population of frogs, or worms, or people, can die for no reason whatsoever, just because that is the way the numbers work.” That quote right there explains how much you are learning. Mark is very intelligent and you read what is going on in his mind. I learned a lot of extraneous evidence that I didn’t even know would be useful to
