Many coming of age texts explore the common issues of being an outsider. Both texts show different experiences of belong and how we can both welcome and reject the chance to be a part of society. This is certainly the case in Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Zero, directed by Christopher Kezelos. Both texts demonstrate a very similar but also a very different experience of being an outsider. There many similarities in the protagonists Christopher and Zero, but they also have their differences. Similarly their endings are a little bit similar, but it is mostly very different. But both the text demonstrate the experience of being an outsider.

This is evident with both Zero and Christopher when the narrator from zero says ‘However, we're not all born equal... for some, life will be a constant battle offering zero opportunities’ (Zero, August 2010). Similarly in Curious Incident many times throughout the book it is indicated that ‘[Christopher] [has] lots of behavioural problems’ (Haddon, pg. 59), the audience can infer that the Christopher is autistic, which sets him apart from the rest of society. However they are different in the sense that Zero wants to be accepted by society, and be a part of it, this is in contrast to …show more content…
Both the texts end with the protagonists finding what they were looking for. For Christopher it was his Mum, and the murder of the dog, but for Zero it was him finding his belonging in society. The endings significantly differ between the texts, because in Curious Incident, Christopher helps himself and his family, but he doesn't help the autistic community, even though he overcomes his fears once or twice in the book, he doesn't learn to adapt them in his life,he also continues to be an outsider,he doesn't change much. This is reversed in Zero, because in the end the protagonist, Zero, achieves something that brings a major change in the whole society, it impacts the Zero community, and the others around them, Zero helps them to see the significance of the number zero, with the help of his girlfriend and his child, Infinity. Evidently when Infinity is born everyone bows down to him, because he is ‘the greatest of all numbers’ (Zero, August 2010). As he is born he also bring an infinite number of opportunities for all Zero, because society now understand the significance of zero. The endings of both texts are more different than they are similar, since Christopher does bring much change whereas Zero

In Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, an attempt at the Bildungsroman genre is made, by employing many of the characteristics of this genre. Many argue that this novel is not a true Bildungsroman however, I will argue that it is, since it contains almost all of the key aspects of this genre, despite the slight twist near the end. I believe that this novel fits the genre of Bildungsroman and demonstrates the coming of age of Christopher through his various experiences in his hometown, as well as on his journey to find his mother. In this essay I will discuss the main components of Bildungsroman: emotional loss, a journey, and transformation and the way in which they are displayed in this novel through Christopher.…

Logic is the reasoning assessed on the principles of validity. Emotion is the intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning. The rule of balance defines the way an individual’s morals bristle with prejudice, evaluating their motivation by pride and vanity in the discovery to reach new insights involving logic and one’s plight of present perception. These concepts can be evident with reference to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, a novel-to-play adaption by Simon Stephens, through questioning the thought of subjecting logic with emotion and observing themes that alert the stability in the conflict of forming individual identity. Its main character, and narrator of the book, fifteen-year-old Christopher is mathematically…

After exploring the themes and concepts of the texts we have studied in class, I have developed an understanding of the struggles and successes of other’s life experiences. This has been explored in reading “The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time,” by British author Mark Haddon, showing the way that society treats Christopher because of his mental illness. In addition to “Remember The Titans,” directed by Boaz Yakin, revealing how extreme racism and discrimination was in the 1960’s for African Americans. Thus, allowing the reader to experience the world from another person’s perspective. Christopher’s spectrum disorder creates a roadblock that makes it harder for him to communicate with other people. Mark Haddon wrote, “And I was sitting on the ground and the woman knelt down on one knee and she said, ’Is there anything I can do to help you?’ And if she was a teacher at school I could have said, ‘Where is 451c Chapter Road, Willesden, London NW2 5NG?’ but she was a stranger, so I said, ‘Stand further away,’ because I didn't like her being so…

This quote is from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which revolves around Christopher, who tries to apply logic to tackle the many problems of life. He always pauses to think about what is going on around him and he remembers most things he sees.…

Instead of showing emotion Christopher, like he normally does, supplies a logical analysis and explanation for the situation. A child who suffers with autism accepts scenarios rather than coping through emotional reactions. Autistic people do this to prevent themselves from wasting time trying to reason through something with emotion, because it is something that they already understand.…

However, instead of accepting that the man is trying to help Christopher, his reaction is violent even if he doesn’t harm the man ‘So I took out my Swiss Army Knife.’ This shows Christopher’s inability to understand that others may be able to think on their own as he doesn’t understand why someone would come to him on their own. The problem is displayed in chapter 163, ‘when I was little I didn’t understand about other people having minds’, and although he says, ‘I don’t find this difficult now’, it is still evident that he is still struggling with the idea of other people having minds, even if he can cope with the idea better than when he was younger. This shows that having a unique protagonist to follow throughout the story, who isn’t perfect but ultimately human, may be the most…
