In Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, an attempt at the Bildungsroman genre is made, by employing many of the characteristics of this genre. Many argue that this novel is not a true Bildungsroman however, I will argue that it is, since it contains almost all of the key aspects of this genre, despite the slight twist near the end. I believe that this novel fits the genre of Bildungsroman and demonstrates the coming of age of Christopher through his various experiences in his hometown, as well as on his journey to find his mother. In this essay I will discuss the main components of Bildungsroman: emotional loss, a journey, and transformation and the way in which they are displayed in this novel through Christopher.…

This notion is prominent when Christopher states “So I groaned to make the time pass quicker and not think” in the midst of a fit. Christopher’s tendency to shut down, groan, and curl himself into a ball essentially reveals the unpractical, self-destructive nature of how he copes with difficulty. As Haddon writes from the perspective of Christopher, the implementation of how Christopher copes with difficulty is highly significant as it provides the responder with realistic detail of how an individual with Asperger’s syndrome responds to stress, thus conveying interesting ideas of coping with…

That somebody murders a dog because his wife left him, and then tells his son that his mother died, instead of telling him that his mother moved with another man. I do not see this as a common thing. However, if we look at the story as a whole; a 15 year old with autism that struggles to understand other people. That is something we can relate to current situations. There are probably other people with a similar disorder as Christopher.…

Traditionally, we think a hero to be someone who is physically strong but over time evolves into someone who is mentally strong. In both The Odyssey by Homer, a story about a great Greek hero and his journey back home to his wife and son, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, a story about a boy who has autism and runs away from home and faces many mental roadblocks along the way, heroic traits are displayed. Both of these books show heroes who emerged and gained strength. Odysseus illustrates incredible physical strength but lacks mental strength.…

c In addition Christopher takes the news of his mother’s death, fairly well, with showing no emotion. Instead of showing emotion Christopher, like he normally does, supplies a logical analysis and explanation for the situation. A child who suffers with autism accepts scenarios rather than coping through emotional reactions. Autistic people do this to prevent themselves from wasting time trying to reason through something with emotion, because it is something that they already understand.…

There has been a lot of criticism on whether Haddon accurately displays Asperger’s syndrome. I think theres a lot of criticism because autism can range from mild to severe, and readers want to know where specifically Christopher lies so they know that Haddon is accurate in his description. Despite this, I do not think the accuracy of autism in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, should hinder the great work of literature seen in this book. The author never mentions Christopher’s specific diagnosis in the novel, and I think Haddon did this on purpose because he did not want his book to be judged and seen as a book that gives you an inside view to someone who has…
