American Culture Vs Filipino Culture Essay

1. What are the similarities between you and the person of that different cultural group (while responding to this question, please identify the cultural groups and briefly share your rational for selecting that specific individual)? First, let’s define culture. Edward B. Tylor defined culture as, “the complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.” (Tylor, 1884) In American culture, People are mainly independent minded. In Filipino culture, people usually have a collectivist mind state. Americans usually tend to speak their minds and they do not let what other people say or think dictate how they should act. Filipino cultural usually has more familial intervention and input into everyday choices and activities. Americans are usually very open minded. If you were to be friends with this person, what changes would you and the person you have interviewed have to make in your lives and why? I was already friends with this person before the interview. I learn a lot from this person. I would not have to employ any changes in my life or his life for us to continue to be friends. I’ve touched on the comparison between American culture and Filipino culture. However there may be stark differences in the way that Americans and Filipinos live their every day lives, they are many similarities in our two cultures.
