The cultural competencies encompass the ever changing care of patients. The United States has a vast majority of immigrants from various parts of the world. With this knowledge, it is imperative that we as nursing students and future nurses provide high quality care to all patients, regardless of where they are from. The main goal of nursing focuses on patient centered care. When we take into account the patient’s beliefs, values, traditions, lifestyles, and practices we are then able to treat them holistically. Holistic care provides the best outcomes for the patient and their families.
If a patient from India is assigned to our care, specific nursing considerations need to be addressed. For example, Indian patients cannot have any pork or beef products. Even in our nursing classes we learn the background and cultural beliefs of other nursing students and cultures with large populations in the US. It’s is important to understand the basic beliefs of most cultures that way we are prepared to treat those types of patients.
Samantha: the one place I observe cultural awareness all the time is at my job: Green Chimneys. It’s a residential child’s facility and we have to accommodate our nursing care and dining hall services based around the ethnicity, cultural, and religious beliefs of the children.

We are administering care based on the patient and their cultural beliefs and values. This ensures the patient a healing environment in which they are more aware and comfortable.
