The Cult Of Virginity Summary

The essay I found to be most interesting this week was The Cult of Virginity . As a woman, I think that it is hard to talk about our sexuality and the topic of virginity compared to men. It is sad that women who have had sex are considered damaged goods while sexually active men are treated like kings. The idea of virginity has so much power yet the Harvard medical school library didn't have a clear definition of it. I doesn't make much sense, the difference between men and women and how we talk about sex. Women are seen as sluts if they are too open about their sex lives or they are seen as prudes if they don't speak about it. Is there a happy medium for women or will there always be this constant struggle to talk about sex. I personally think

I would like to examine Taylor Clark’s essay on Nervous Nellies or better yet her approach to explaining why women seem to be more anxious about life than mean. I believe the author did a great job in combining all three of the types of reasoning. She utilized the pathos style in appealing to our emotions by helping us actually take emotion out of the equation of why females react nervously when it comes to challenges. She showed us her authority on the subject by citing her book called Nerve.…

The Lemon test has been extremely influential, as it aids in clarifying a complicated entanglement of religion and legislation. In addition to the clarity, the popularity could be attributed to the ease of applicability. Not only is the lemon test pertinent to state funding, but also pubic school curriculum. On example is Kitzmiller vs. Dover (2005). This case questioned the ability of schools to teach intelligent design (ID) as a scientific alternative to evolution.…

In E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “Sandman,” Nathanael falls in love with the object of his desires, the devastatingly gorgeous Olympia. Nathanael worships Olympia for her beauty, her muteness, and her lack of opinion. Eventually though, Nathanael realizes that Olympia is an automaton and has no substances because she is constructed merely to be the most perfect looking woman. Similarly, In Jeffrey Eugenides The Virgin Suicides, The Lisbon sisters are worshipped solely for their bodies prohibiting them from having outward, recognizable personalities and lending to the community idolizing and fetishizing them. Parables have long been a custom to educate people about pertinent morals. The Gospel of Matthew is constantly informative because it urges “the reader to identify with characters ‘who receive’ Jesus and ‘do’ God’s will” (Achtemeier 662). This claim is evident throughout the Gospel of Matthew and in The Parable of the Ten Virgins, as Matthew would constantly “persuade the reader to emulate their example” (Achtemeier 662). The Parable of the Ten Virgins symbolizes God’s Parousia during the eschaton. Matthew conveys a moral to his readers, indicating that those of the Church who are prepared for Jesus’ second arrival will be saved, and those who are not will suffer.…

How the Concept of Virginity Has Changed Virginity has been highly valued for centuries, and is still highly valued in certain places and among certain people today. It held value in Biblical times, and it held value among the Protestants and Puritans in the 17th century. However, the mid-20th century saw hippies and the Free Love movement, which subverted the societal conventions surrounding virginity by placing little, if any value on it. Marx 's Conflict Theory states that inequalities in a society will eventually result in changes to that society. The concept of virginity is a contributor between the inequality between the sexes, thus was bound to be turned on its head as feminism came into play.…
