Civil or not? The Civil War occurred on 1861 in America and was fought for the American people and citizens. Although the war was fought for the citizens and was named ‘Civil’ only one group of the citizens, either the Union or the Confederate, won what they desired. So was the Civil War civil? Between the Union and Confederate existed several opposing opinions, which led to the Civil War. Some of these issues were the different types of economic structures, perceptions of equality and freedom, and the conflicting viewpoints on states rights and national powers.…

The Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939 is a historically complex event interwoven in both internal and foreign agendas. This was manifest in the involvement of various factions from militia, unions, and parties of different standings and ambitions. Not less important was the overt interest of other countries in the Spanish national affairs, such as the direct intervention of Germany and Italy or the non-intervention stance of Britain and France; an aspect which would ultimately decide the outcome of the civil war itself. The war is predominantly recorded as a fight between the Right-winged Nationalists and the Left-winged Republicans, the Conservatives versus the Liberals, and to many, Spanish Civil War had been seen ultimately as a warfare waged…

The Cold War took place between Russia and the United States, and Russia was trying to spread communism while the United States was trying to stop that. During the Cold War period, the communist government influenced the way that the Salvadoran government acted, known as the Domino theory, as the Salvadoran government began violating the human rights of the citizens. A civil war came out of this unequal treatment of citizens, and a peace treaty was formed twelve years later to permit this from ever happening again. The Cold War negatively impacted El Salvador more so than positively because the communist government in Russia influenced the Salvadoran government to violate the human rights of the citizens, which ended up creating a civil war…

However, the most important reason this war started is because Republican Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, and his beliefs about slavery were unlike from the southerners. His election brought so much controversy in the southern states that introduced the idea to go to a war in order to not be involved with his political ideas. However, after four years of war the country stay united, and the issue of slavery was…

Chapter seven of the reading this week was about the war against Mexico. The title of the chapter was a very fitting title, because the Americans saw the Mexicans as foreigners in their own land. The Americans wanted to claim the Mexican land as their own, and pushed the native people out of their homes. One thing extremely interesting about the reading was the fact that the Irish people were fighting against the Mexicans, when the Irish were just in the same position as the Mexicans; only the Irish were facing the British. In 1830, the government in Mexico prohibited American immigration into Texas, as well as banned slavery in Mexico.…

The United States had a great fear for communism during the time of El Salvador’s civil war. Ronald Reagan said this in regard to why the United States decided to support the government of El Salvador "to halt the infiltration into the Americas, by terrorists and by outside interference, and those who aren't just aiming at El Salvador but, I think, are aiming at the whole of Central and possibly later South America and, I'm sure, eventually North America. In my opinion, the Mexican-American war was not justified. Originally, when the Americans began spreading the idea of manifest destiny, the Mexicans, in general, had two attitudes towards it. Some admired this idea, however, some also feared it. They were concerned that the Americans would start trying to expand into Mexico and basically push the borders. However, Americans paid very little attention to what Mexico was thinking or saying.…

Walter in “The Critical Barrier to Civil War Settlement” tries to explain why civil wars are never ended with a peaceful settlement and fought until one side beats the other. This is because there are problems of enforcement and vulnerability; both sides prefer to fight instead of cooperate because it leaves them vulnerable (Walter compares this exchange with the Prisoner’s Dilemma situation). Unlike interstate wars, making cheating not favorable is difficult; either side cannot withhold resources or build military defenses without triggering a response from the other side and there is no neutral force or government to enforce peace. According to Walter, there are two ways to solve this issue: design power-sharing institutions involving both…

Part of the peace process that began in 1991 required an investigation on the killings of civilians, particularly the supposed genocide that had taken place with the purpose of eliminating the Mayan population. Through the Accord of Oslo on June 23, 1994, the United Nations with the cooperation of the Government of the Republic of Guatemala formed the Commission for Historical Clarification (CEH) in order to “clarify with objectivity, equity and impartiality” the acts of violence and potential human rights violations connected to the armed conflict in Guatemala (Laura Powell, 2013). Much of the problem was on the fact that there was no written documentation that a Mayan genocide had been order. There was evidence and testimonies that mass killings…

The civil war was a devastating American war that pitted the north against the south, resulting in over 600,000 American casualties, making it the deadliest war in United States history. The war officially lasted from 1861-1865, but animosity between the Union north and Confederate south had been building up for decades leading to the war. The causes of the civil war are numerous and complex, but the four basic ideas behind it were their differing economies, slavery, states rights, and secession. The North and South’s economies were based on vastly different industries.…
