Looking for witches, you will find some in Salem, Massachusetts. In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller was about the Salem witch trials. The underlining message in the play was of McCarthyism in the 1950s. When McCarthy said he had a list of 205 people in high position that are communist. In the play man cheats on his wife with a young girl making her fall completely in love with him. She and her friends dance in the woods, which was forbidden and are caught. The girls later claim witchcraft and that Salem had been overrun by the devil and his follower’s witches. The main girl Abigail accuses the wife of the man she loves John Procter however John is the one who was hanged for witchcraft. Miller’s play is universal and enduring because he examines the motif of one’s name throughout this play, and this is still prevalent in my life today.

In the beginning of the play Reverend Parris asked Abigail if her name was white in the village. He as the Reverend was like to mayor and did not want to tarnish his name with false accusations of witchcraft. John Proctor was accused of witchcraft by his maid after her testimony against the other girls to win their favor again. He was well respected in town and was known for speaking his mind. John was told to confess to witchcraft and after months of torture confessed. After confessing he was told to sign his confession and he did. He would not give the court the signed confession though they wished to post it on the church door. Proctor then replies “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! … I have given you my soul: leave me my name! (Miller 143). Proctor had lied, giving the court his soul when he lied about the devil. Wishing to keep some dignity he wanted to keep his name clear. Once a name was tarnished it is hard to polish again and proctor knew
