In the beginning of the play Reverend Parris asked Abigail if her name was white in the village. He as the Reverend was like to mayor and did not want to tarnish his name with false accusations of witchcraft. John Proctor was accused of witchcraft by his maid after her testimony against the other girls to win their favor again. He was well respected in town and was known for speaking his mind. John was told to confess to witchcraft and after months of torture confessed. After confessing he was told to sign his confession and he did. He would not give the court the signed confession though they wished to post it on the church door. Proctor then replies “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! … I have given you my soul: leave me my name! (Miller 143). Proctor had lied, giving the court his soul when he lied about the devil.
