The Crucible is set in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. The story is based on the witch trials that took place there, and how people accused others of working with the Devil, and were hysterical about it.
The Puritan church was very strict and no one was safe. The story starts out with Reverend Parris with his daughter Betty. Betty had been with Abigail, Tituba, and the other girls dancing naked, and performing witchcraft in the forest. Betty was either traumatized or scared, so she went into a“coma-like” state, which caused people to think she was touched by the Devil.
We learn about the affair between John Proctor(a farmer), and Abigail Williams(Parris’s niece). Abigail wants John all to herself, but John is married. She needed to kill Elizabeth(John’s wife). This sparks the entire story, and it explains why they were dancing and performing witchcraft in the woods. Abigail then realizes that she can use the fear that people have of witchcraft to her advantage. Abigail is a very good liar, and she is VERY manipulative. People wanted to know figure out why Betty and Ruth(The Putmans only surviving child who was also in the woods) were affected. Of course, they went straight to witchcraft. This event set off the hysteria in salem.

It’s very interesting how time seems to repeat itself throughout all of history, and it sometimes make me worry about the future. Something we could do in our society to change this, is to be more accepting of religions other than
