The Crucible was a play written by Arthur Miller. It was his interpretation of the witch trials that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts. A group of girls was found dancing in the woods while chanting a suspicious tune. Rumors began to spread throughout the town of witchcraft. Much of the rumors emerged from small lies of Abigail Williams and her plan to pursue a forbidden relationship with John Proctor. Lies pile up and Abigail gathers all of the other girls to join in on her plan. Accusations of witchcraft were spread all through the town. The people of Salem were struck with paranoia. No one had any trust for one another. Issues with money arose only to result in Abigail taking the money and running away. The lies and scandal of Abigail never got resolved in the little town of Salem.

She and John Proctor had developed a relationship that later resulted in an affair. Proctor had no intention for his wife to find out and had no plans to pursue a relationship any further with Abigail. Abigail had other intentions. She had a strong love for Proctor and, more than anything, wanted his wife, Elizabeth, out of the picture. In the play, Abigail says, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes?
