Often times reputation didn’t matter anymore when people were accused. This is what made Reverend Hale begin to feel uncertain about whether the accused people were actually guilty. Reputation also was close tied to religion; if people were good and trustworthy then they were pat of the church. In John Proctor’s case his reputation was so important to him that he would rather die then soil it.
Good vs. Evil
The entire town of Salem based its belief system on good vs. evil. When Tituba confesses her sins of witchcraft she claims that she wants to be a good person now and that she will stop hurting people. She says she needs to stop serving the Devil.
Most people are eventually confused about which side is actually good, and which is evil.
Jealousy:
In The Crucible many of the characters are driven by jealousy and greed. Abigail is jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, and she wants her to die so that she can marry John Proctor. Thomas Putnam, for example, is jealous of other people’s property, that’s why he wants George Jacobs to die because he possesses great property of land.
