The Crucible Selfish Quotes Essay

Selfishness is needed to protect people, when self-responsible people are considered weak and defenseless. For example, “Abigail: She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” (40) This quote shows that Abagail was about to be condemned as a witch. Therefore, by accusing Betty of witchcraft she is able to protect herself. But, in order for Betty to protect herself, she must confess to being a witch which is selfish because it can result in other people being blamed for witchcraft. For example, “Betty: I saw Martha Bellows with the Devil! Abigail: I saw Goody Sibber with the Devil!” (45) This quote shows that these girls practiced a form of witchcraft in the first act by dancing and in order to protect themselves from being persecuted in the second act, they have to blame a large quantity of people to divert the attention from themselves to others. …show more content…
Aby will charge lechery on you Mr. Proctor!” (76) This quote shows that if Mary tells the truth when testifying for Elizabeth Proctor than Abigail will accuse Mary of witchcraft. She knows that there is a good chance that in this situation that even if Mary isn’t accused by Abigail of witchcraft, Elizabeth will still be seen as guilty. Similarly; in Act 3, For example, “Is it possible, child, that the spirits you have seen are illusion only, some deception that may cross your mind when - …..Abigail, looking about in the air, clasping her arms about her as though cold: I - I know not. A wind, a cold wind, has come. Her eyes fall on Mary Warren.” (100-101) This quote shows that when Mary did a self-responsible action by telling the truth that Abigail was not seeing illusions, Danforth starts to believe that Abigail saw spirits that were ‘an illusion only’. Abigail is able to protect herself from being caught in the act of lying by pretending that she is being tormented by Marry Warren’s

A Fable of Witchcraft “He who tells a lie is not sensible how great a task he undertakes; for he must be forced to invent twenty more to maintain that one.” (Alexander Pope). Arthur Miller proves this point very strongly in his dramatic work, The Crucible. One of the main themes in this story is that of lying and how a simple lie can create chaos, more lies and overreactions. In the tragedy, The Crucible, Arthur Miller suggests that when people tell a lie that the situation can quickly spiral out of control and more lies will unfold to build upon the one already told; as a result of her series of lies, Abigail Williams became so uneasy that she left Salem, proving that liars never win.…

A way that Abigail displays that theme is through her obsession of Proctor. In the story, Abigail puts her own need of Proctor before considering the lives of others. Subsequently, that desire leads to her making choices that do harm to others like Proctor and Elizabeth since that Proctor ends up being convicted of witchcraft because of her accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft, which makes Proctor unhappy, and Elizabeth also loses her husband, whom she loves thanks to Abigail’s need of having Proctor. Using her own deception for her own need of not being convicted of witchcraft is the way that Abigail displays that theme. That means that Abigail uses deception in order to save herself rather than tell the truth of all the events that happen to her.…

The Crucible The Crucible is a play written in 1952 by Arthur Miller. This book relates to what we have studied this semester because it is centered around the Salem Witchcraft Trials that occurred in Massachusetts in 1692. My junior year of high school, we were required to read both the play and the movie and it is something that I will never forget. The scene that always come to my mind when I think of The Crucible is when the opening scene where Tituba and some of the girls are practicing witchcraft around a fire late at night in the middle of the woods. I also think of the end scene in which 19 people were hanged.…

This reveals how much power Abigail has over others and further emphasizes how far she is willing to go to ensure her plan succeeds.…

Examples of such goals would be, getting accepted into a top notch university, a scholarship, or a really high gpa. The fear of not being able to obtain such goals causes the students to act selfishly in stressful situations. In The Crucible, Abigail and several other girls pretend they are god’s “helpers” who expose the people who are “committing” witchcraft. Deriving from this central idea, Arthur Miller employs the use of self-preservation rather than thinking about the consequences of their actions.…
