Parris is the one that does the agitating in the story, for example, “Then you will confess, will you not? It were attacking spirits made you faint!” Parris is accusing Mary Warren of lying and is trying to push her to her breaking point in order to get a confession. Belligerently, he does this multiple times throughout the story to different characters. Another example of his ability to overbear others is when he tells tituba; “Parris, pressing in on her: Who? Who? Their names, their names!” These examples show how Parris has the power to send people over the edge to confessing in the story. Their reactions to him pushing represents a catalyst in a chemical
