Hale is introduced as an intellectual, yet, kindhearted man who is called into Salem to investigate the possibility of witchcraft. Like any expert, Hale records his findings in, “books that the devil stands stripped of all his brute disguises” and,with these books, he is able to diagnose the inflicted. Hale's ability to diagnose what no doctor could, makes his reputation better any physician. This leads Reverend Parris to call Hale in when his daughter falls under the suspicion of witchcraft. While observing Betty Parris, Hale demonstrates his ability of persuasion when the girls to confess to conjuring devil.
