All in all, witchcraft in New England and how it effected women was portrayed very well in Karlsen's book. I was impressed by the statistical methods that Karslen gathered and used in her book. Many of them supported her idea that women were the sole targets of these witchcraft accusations. I also liked her documentary set up in her study. She detailed these events that she gathered from a number of collections and set them in chronological order.…

In the early Medieval Ages, the component of Witchcraft had not yet blended to any extent, and so one finds approaches to the corruption of witchcraft focusing on the old Roman or Germanic fear of harmful magic, while churchmen felt complementary to express broad skepticism about other aspect of witchcraft. Although the concept of witchcraft drew on ideas of how primitive Jews and heretics were formed, there is no credible evidence that the European witchcraft trials were actually directed at the Jews. Other secular states also continued to consider witchcraft as first and foremost an attack by magical and supernatural…

The Salem Witch Trials, had its dealings with the supernatural world, people afflicted (or bewitched) seeing “witches’ in their visions, a “mysterious” man taunting people to sign his book, or even unexplained deaths of livestock or even an infant. Whatever it may have been, the people of Salem Village all assume that it is “supernatural.” Samuel Parris and others speculate that anything supernatural is because of the doings, or even presence of the devil. It is this concept that brought forth the Witch Trials which convicted over two-hundred, and nineteen of them hanged. Their convictions stemmed from people who bewitched, seeing them in visions.…

Witches! The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem is a National Geographic book that gives an overview of the Salem Witch Trials from its start to its finish. The author, Rosalyn Schanzer, is complete in her telling of the events, starting from the point where no one guessed that the afflicted girls were being tortured by witches and ending with the stories of how each person lived out their lives after the trials ended. The drawback of recording over a year of time within 131 pages is that the information isn’t as in depth as possible, and though everything is touched on there are obvious focuses, such as the reverend, who appears on nearly twenty different pages, as opposed the the symptoms of the girls’ affliction which appeared on…

This weeks reading, like most of the other books was very unique compared to any other reading I have read before. Sometimes I find this frustrating because I really have to switch the way my brain thinks to get into the proper mindset to read these books. I still have to analysis the facts and assess the writing, but in this class, I really have to work to remove my bias from all the reading. Before this class, I personally thought people who believed in magic and witchcraft were crazy because there is no way to prove any of that, so reading this book with an open mind would have been nearly impossible for me. However, throughout the past few weeks, I’ve learned that many people’s beliefs in magic and witchcraft aren’t that different from…

For thousands of years, people have had a fascination with the art of magic. What was once considered as a counterculture of witches and other deviants, magic has evolved into a unique performing art that not only has the ability to give people a sense of childlike wonder, but also connect with people in a much deeper way than any other form of entertainment (Jandt, 18). It has the power to make people believe in the impossible and inspires people to follow their dreams. Recently, a new bill has been introduced to Congress to “establish magic as a rare and valuable art form and national treasure” (Magic is Art). This bill would allow the art of magic to be preserved and protected for generations to come.…
