Research Essay on the Novel the Crucible The novel the crucible is a play that was written by Arthur Miller following the inspiration from the McCarthy trials that occurred in the 1950’s. In this play, Miller displays the inconsistencies that occurred at Salem following the deeply rooted belief of witchcrafts among the people within that society at that time. This play expounds much on the religious persecutions that were also inherent in most parts of America after the introduction of Christianity. During this period of time, the society advocated for the strict adherence to the Christian doctrines and many people were either persecuted wrongly or justly for the belief that they have violated such doctrines (Miller, 1996). Abigail uses her power over the girls in her community and misguides them into the evil forest in the neighborhood that people were forbidden from going into. All of them are aware of the consequences of breaking such a rule. Abigail further uses her power to direct the girls into doing something that the whole community was fighting to get rid of, what was thought to be just a mere play of the girls in the same age group turns into something that is considered to be the most evil act in the community of Salem. Abigail having noted Tituba’s power to communicate with the dead, she therefore uses her power of the master to command Tituba to cast the evils at Mrs. Proctor. Through her influence over all the girls that went to play with her in the forest, Abigail therefore portrays that women are more evil than men in the society. She has shown that most women would prefer to use the evil forces such as witchcraft to get rid of their enemies.
