Our name is a title which we are given from birth, and it also reflects our reputation throughout our lives. All of our decisions and actions have a direct impact on our name. Such as in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller the value of a name versus the value of the truth is compared. Some villagers in Salem Massachusetts are accused of being witches and in association with the devil. The people who were accused were all innocent but they would confess to avoid being hung for denying that they associated with the devil. This would result in two options being, is it better to have a clean name and die with the truth. Like Kendrick Lamar said “If i'm going to tell a real story, I'm gonna start with my name”, this quote means that your name …show more content…
Throughout the play John is at a constant battle to keep his name clean as well as his reputation. This reaches a pinnacle when he is accused by the court of being bewitched by the devil because he exclaims “God is dead and we will all burn in hell together” . From this point forward John is sentenced to hang because he has been accused of being bewitched by the court even though he is not. He has two options now, to admit that he was a associate with the devil and sign a statement saying he is a witch so he can live or he can not admit to any of the lies which have been made about him and die with a clean name. John struggles over which option he should take because if he signs the statement admitting his guilt then it will be hung on the church door for everyone to see. Instead John chooses to not sign the statement and to hang with his friends and to leave a good name for his sons in the village. When John says “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” he means that he has accepted death but he just wants to have a good name which will go down in history, which is what he gets.
