In order to reach eternal light, Scarlett had to be brought back to Ireland to be sacrificed. The cult nominated Noah to form a relationship with Scarlett so he could get her to go willingly. Over the time period that Noah was given, he fell in love with Scarlett and started to question what was so important about eternal life that an innocent human being must perish. “My community thanked me and told me how incredible I was for pulling it off and getting her home. I had a hero’s welcome but I didn’t feel like a hero. I felt like the devil” (Preston 172). Noah is caught between his feeling for Scarlett and the cult. Many movies and works of literature today are ones that claim to be “based on a true story”. While that may be the case, these pieces are never what actually occurred, thanks to the fact that authors and directors take creative liberties with the stories in order to enhance them. If one examines a historical document such as a sermon by Puritan John Edwards and compares it to The Crucible (a tale about The Puritans) or A Summer Life by Gary Soto, they will see that they are different, yet similar. Understanding historical pieces as such before watching or reading something based on it leads to a transparent view of what occurred. Having a skewed perspective on these historical happenings may lead to incorrect statements being made and in The…

The definition of crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. This definition can relate to the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller because the court can be thought of as the heat in which is melting the metal, but for the play it means that the court is causing tension in the town of Salem. Like the change of the metal, going from solid to liquid, many people either go through changes or try to make others change in the play; some of the most remembered for the changes are John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. John and Elizabeth both change themselves through the play, but Williams tries to change those around her.…

Almost every life event seems to have a hero and a villain who contrast each other. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller recreates a perfect example of this concept using two very important main characters. The Crucible itself is about the Salem witch trials which occurred in 1692. In short, it all started when a group of young girls, including Abigail Williams, were caught attempting witchcraft in the woods. When they were caught, they made up lies and flipped the accusations on other villagers that they did not like.…

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, many of the characters were adapted or changed in order to better entertain the audience. For some the changes involved their name, age, story, or quite possibly their outcome. As for Rebecca Nurse, most of her fictional story remained true to her actual life. Rebecca was considered one of the most holy and wise women in Salem, but unfortunately she was eventually accused of witchcraft. The story of Rebecca Nurse is a very interesting, devastating series of events that eventually led to her shocking and unacceptable death.…

Good morning/ Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the P&C. Before I begin, I would like to thank all of you for attending this meeting. I know all of us have different opinions about the play the senior students are studying in English, called “The Crucible”. I understand that you are concerned about the way the play shows these students about witchcraft and devil worshipping, how the male lead is considered to be a paedophile, how Christians are given a bad name from this play and more. But in reality, the play is more than that, the play isn’t just about witchcraft or devil worshipping and John Proctor’s affair is not the point of the play. There are various reasons why “The Crucible” should be banned in Queensland schools, but there are also various reasons why this play is a valid play for students to study in Senior English.…
