Mary Warren is used by the author to show how people can overcome the scare’s of society. In this case it was witchcraft. Previously we have seen two different groups. One being Abigail, the one who is sucked in by this scare. The other being John Proctor, who represents the group of people in society that are strictly against this scare, and will die before they submit to the trend of society. At the beginning of the story Mary Warren seemed to be caught up in the trend of being under witchcraft. On page 870 (Middle of Act 3) Mary confesses saying “I cannot lie no more. I am with God, I am with God.” Mary is trying to say to the court here that she has been lying, and she cannot lie, because that would be against God, but she is clearly stating she is with God. Mary is the part of society that realizes they have gone against their old ways, and notices that this event (witchcraft, in this case) has changed them, and they do not want to be apart of in
