Are People Basically Good
Are people basically good, and what causes them to be good? This question has been asked for many years. By philosophers, psychologists, scientists, and many more people who are curious about the subject. To find if people are basically good we must find out what the definition of good is. One common meaning of good is, to be good people need to do what is best for the majority. The Crucible, Monument 14, and the Article "Are People Basically Good" help define and answer the question. The characters that exhibited the traits of being “good” or “bad” were Abigail williams, Giles Corey, Mary Warren, and John Proctor from “The Crucible”, the victims from Monument 14, and the 2 people discussed in the article. Both faced stressful situations. The con man was trying to buy a car for an “agent” while making money for himself. The woman who had just moved to a location and was trying to make new friends. The con man was trying to manipulate others so he can benefit even though it was not the right thing to do. While the woman was trying to get to know her neighbors by helping them with their needs, which benefited her by being able to make new relationships with her neighbors. The con man had a choice to either be truthful with the people he was negotiating with so they all benefit, but he chose to be selfish and lie to the people he was doing business making him “bad”. The woman had the choice to just ignore her new neighbors and not interact with them which would result in her not even meeting her new neighbors , but she chose to interact with her neighbors in a helpful and positive way making her “good”. Also like the characters in “Monument 14” and “The Crucible” the characters discussed in the article were defined as good or bad by their actions done in a stressful
