In Arthur Miller's play the crucible there are several things that contribute to the development of themes of lies and deceit and fear. The main three being how the characters change through the course of the play,the way the setting develops and plot structure.
Threw-out the Millers play many characters and how they develop contribute to the themes one such character is Elizabeth Proctor; in the beginning she was an honest and trustworthy person. Toward the end, however she learns that sometimes you need to lie in order to keep the ones you love save; in act III Elizabeth was asked by the court “is your husband a leech?” her response was “no sir”(874) knowing admitting that he did in fact commit the sin of adultery would have sent him to his death. She lied to protect him and in the end it didn’t work out the way she had planned. In act II while talking to John she says “there will be 14 people in jail now.” Showing the she clearly acknowledges the fact that the fear of the town has caused innocent people to end up in jail awaiting their death. …show more content…
Parris and the Proctor’s home, in act III the setting changes to the meeting house where most of the action ensues. In act II John intentionally withholds information from the court to save himself from questioning when Elizabeth tells him “You must go to Salem and tell them it’s a fraud”(851) he still decides to keep it to himself until in act III where he admits to the affair and to the fact that he withheld information from the court. Also in act IV, John was in jail on the day he was to be executed, his wife begged him to lie in order to save himself at first he did lie, but once they said to sign his confession he refused, saying “I will not sign myself to a lie” in the end the lies and fear did not take him
