Elizabeth finds out that John is having an affair with Abigail, so she fires her. From the second she finds out about the affair, she becomes cold towards John. John knows why she acts the way she does, so he perpetually apologizes to her. John only wants to make Elizabeth happy, as he says, “I mean to please you, Elizabeth” (Miller 50) and when he states, “I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart” (Miller 54).
