The Crucible Through out history, reputation is the key that leads to people’s success. People do not want their reputations get blackened; Therefore people sometimes to keep others’ secrets or to hurt some innocents to protect their own reputations. For example, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, people blinded themselves in front of lies and injustice to protect their scarce reputations. This is best illustrated by John Proctor, judge Danforth, and Abigail William because they should sacrifice their own reputation to establish justice in salem. In the play, John Proctor’s thoughtless of the other had made innocent women hanged by being falsely accused by his lover Abigail William. In the play, he refused to go to Salem to tell the trial that the girls are lying : “ … John—let you go tonight… I know I cannot keep it. I say I will think on it!” (109) The quote demonstrated John Proctor was unwilling to get involved into the case because he was worried that his reputation is going to get blackened. She hated Elizabeth and always put curse on Elizabeth: “…She is a cold, sniveling woman…” (177). She was a selfish person who did not has courage to admitted her wrong doing like Mary Warren did, but in contrast, she accused Mary Warren nefariously: “The wings! Her wings are spreading! Marry, please, don’t, don’t —!” (226). This showed she was a abhorrent person who does not care other people’s lives.
