tragedy is a type of structure the author uses that moves the reader with a character that
obtains a fatal flaw. Tragic heros’ go through many predicaments throughout the play. One of
the main characters in “The Crucible”, John Proctor; symbolizes the tragic hero of this book.
Mr. Proctor relates to a tragic hero because of his tragic flaw, his character makes a
choice between life and death, and faces his destiny with courage.
John Proctor posses the necessities to classify as a tragic hero. Not only does

Her motives start to simply become a desire for revenge. Abigail began
to be extremely jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, which starts the beginning of the hysteria
represented with the witch hunts in the town of Salem. She manipulates other characters to
believe that the madness going on in the town has to do with the devil, but we all know that
she is the reason behind it all. Knowing that the court is convinced that anything suspicious
coincides with the devil, Abigail brings up Elizabeth’s name in court to Judge Danforth.
Proctor eventually realizes that he can stop Abigail’s rampage through Salem but only if he
confesses for his sins. John Proctor is a proud man of his reputation, but his emotions run
high and he screams that Abigail is a “whore”(109). Consequently, Proctor’s confession leads
to his arrest and conviction as a witch. In the end, John died defending his honor; he sacrificed
his life for an atonement for his sins of weakness.
Tragedy literature includes many qualities such as the hero of the story choosing
