The Crucible Field Trip

For my “field trip” assignment, I attended Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at the Shakespeare Taven in Atlanta. The Tavern is in the midst of the city, which seems to immerse itself in Atlanta’s culture. It is a clean, building with a main floor and a balcony, where I watched the play. They also had “old-timey” foods available for purchase. The Shakespearean Tavern, with the props and actors’ expressive tone, and also the wardrobe choices worn, helped the play stay true-to-its-time, as well as do an excellent job of staying true to the original story. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (1953), a powerful play set in Puritan Massachusetts, asserts that across time, members of society have been alienated due to minute differences that go against the accepted conformity, a trend that has existed well into modern times; however, this idea would not have been as clearly communicated if the play’s setting had been other in American colonies. This message most appropriately connects with Salem, Massachusetts, where it was famed for its witch trials during colonial times. While the idea of shunning others due to their differences of opinion can be seen anywhere, the consequences of doing this would not have been so lucidly communicated had the play taken place in other colonies like Pennsylvania. Founded…

The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller about the factual events that took place in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. The Crucible is again about factual events and was written to inform people on the tragic events that happened 300 years ago. The play by Miller shows the true reason why the trials started and why they continued. The Crucible also provides insight into the cold war time period and things that people did in fear of Soviet spies and how similar it was to a “Witch Hunt”. The Crucible is mainly about how mass hysteria can cause small harmless events to get out of hand quickly even to the point of murder.…

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible uniquely reexamines the Salem witch trials from the perspective of the townspeople swept up in the madness. Over the course of the play, Miller introduces readers and viewers to the individuals of Salem, both the accusers, the righteous, and the ordinary. John Proctor’s struggle to save his wife, Elizabeth, to end the trials, and to preserve his honor take center stage as the drama unfolds. Commonly described as the ‘tragic hero,’ the text of The Crucible clearly portrays Proctor as a virtuous man who overcomes his personal flaws and who stands firm against the unyielding pressures of the Puritan theocracy. However, closer examination of the actions taken by John Proctor reveals that he more accurately personifies…

Twelfth Night Going to the Longwood production of Twelfth Night proved very intriguing from the talented actors, to amazing costumes, extravagant lighting, and slightly modern setting. However, while I enjoyed the performance as a whole; there were a few technical issues that distracted from the overall aesthetic of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Set design is what brings an audience that possibly had no context for the show into the life of the characters. It allows the audience to really step into the world of the play. I believe that the rendition of Twelfth Night that the school had done made some appropriate choices in its set design.…

It was a cold and rainy Friday night, while I was driving to the theater, I felt excited and happy because I had not seen a live theater performance in quite a while. When I arrived in the parking lot of the theater, I noticed that it was almost full. This made me believe that people were interested in watching the play even though we did not have the best weather conditions. Luckily, I was able to get front row seat tickets to see the play The Glass Menagerie performs by PCPA. When I went inside the theater the first thing that I noticed was that the majority of the audience was mature people…
