In act 1 of The Crucible the conflict is established. It opens with Betty asleep and Parris wondered about the town's reaction. Danforth is sensitive to his reputation and believes that John and Francis Nurse and a few others are trying to undermine the court. It is also later discovered that Elizabeth is pregnant but Danforth does not believe her and John says that she must be pregnant because Elizabeth never lies. Also within the act Hale begins to realize the madness of the girls and understands what is really happening. Out of complete desperation John Proctor tells court about the affair to discredit Abigail's character. To discover the truth, Danforth brings Elizabeth into the court and asks her about the affair. Elizabeth responds by saying “I came to think he fancied her. And so one night I lost my wits, I think, and put her out on the highroad.”(Miller, 1953, pg. 120) When asked if John ever committed lechery she said “No, sir.” (Miller, 1953, pg. 120). After this John Proctor was arrested for falsehood and taken to jail. After Mary Warren is pressured she throws the blame onto John Proctor calling him a man of the devil. The act of cheating or adultery still is a problem and will most likely always be a problem. After courtney learned about Scott's unloyalty they broke up and no longer had contact with one another. When people asked about their break up Courtney would never mention the fact that he cheated on her. She would normally tell people that “things just didn't work out” or “we grew apart and the connection was no longer there”. Although both of those reasons were partially true the real reason she broke up with him was never said. Only two other people knew why Courtney left him. After a couple months of witnessing her tell lie after lie I asked her why she never told anyone about what happened. She told me that she was embarrassed. She said “I don't want people to feel bad for me or look at me differently”. She also felt the same about him s “I don't want him to be looked at differently either, he shouldn't be seen as a cheater because he made a mistake and he's not a bad guy.” It took me a decent amount of time to understand where she was coming from because if it were me I would have let everyone know what a awful guy he was, but instead I respected her decision. This situation reminded me of Elizabeth and John's affair. Even though Elizabeth was said to never lie she lied to the court and said that John never cheated on her with Abigail to
