The Crucible, a fitting name for the play. Reading this play was like being thrown into a crucible, over a raging furnace, a boiling pot of of screaming and wailing, people getting hung like Christmas lights in December. From the setting, to the extra dialog, and to the added plots, there were a lot of things similar and different to compare and contrast the movie to the play. One major difference in The Crucible is the setting at the very beginning of the play and movie. The beginning of the play starts in Paris’ house. He is trying to get Abigail to tell him why she was dancing in the woods and is trying to get to the bottom as to why his daughter won’t wake up. In the movie, it starts with the girls dancing in the woods, slinging around a chicken, dancing around the fire, and yelling out all of what they wished. This added scene in the movie actually helped me understand the play more because it was in chronological order and started it from what all happened as opposed to starting with Betty not being able to wake up. In both the play and the movie Abigail drinks the blood, the dancing in the forest does occur, and there is a frog in the soup. These similarities made the play more comprehensive for me. The only things that were different, for the most part, only improved the play and made it a lot more understandable and complete. The added scenes gave more of a visual way to see magine how something may have looked or occurred. The difference in the dialogue was somewhat confusing, but only knowing the play really well. The differences in the plot made the movie more interesting while still staying with the main idea. Regarding all of these things, the movie did a great job of bringing the play to
