She’s not only my literary example but also an example for the residence of the town. She a lowlife who doesn’t go to church. She looks like a stereotypical witch from a cartoon. She’s warted and unkempt. When she’s later accused for witchcraft by Tituba it comes to no surprise to anyone there at the time. Tituba herself is a great example of how people will buckle under the pressure. Mr. Parris’s interrogation method, a violent beating, is more than enough to get Tituba to say the answer they want to hear, even if it’s not true. Tituba was promised she’d be saved if she confessed, thus avoiding social isolation or death. Edward R. Murrows, from “Good Night, and Good Luck”, picks and prods at Senator MccArthy’s claims. Of course Murrows was just poking at the lion, eventually being accused of communism himself. Murrows is a great example of how people don’t always confess but he also demonstrates what risk it comes with to stand steadfast. He loses his show even though he stood his ground against a bully. Bill Paley on the other hand doesn’t take the same risk. He decides he’d rather see one of his best shows go to the drink rather than getting into a political war with Senator MccArthy. He essential gives into the pressure to keep CBS out of Senator MccArthy’s crosshairs, which had a common trend of having many people think you’re a …show more content…
Both demonstrate how one person can start a storm of accusations. Abigail Williams is, essentially, Senator MccArthy. Both make outlandish claims to get certain people judged. Both will call shenanigans on anyone who calls them out on their actions. Both become scarce to avoid the limelight, the Senator getting leaving for an appointment and Abigail bailing out of Salem, which causes their reign to subside. Furthermore Abigail begins the lie to protect her own skin, as dancing in the forest and drinking blood just happens to be against Puritan belief. Those accused by her who didn’t comply with the lie would be cast out of the church and killed. Just the accusation and good acting from the girls is enough to get condemned. This means that Reverend Hale, Danforth, and Hawthorne had the power to kill anyone and, they were wrapped around Abigail’s Finger. She could get anyone killed. And so, many people were killed through abuse of spectral evidence. Spectral evidence is false but lying about spectral evidence is a whole new level of low. Abigail could, and would outcast anyone. So, rather than being outcasted or killed a majority confessed to save their hides, conforming out of fear of the corrupt authority. Senator McCarthy is similar to Abigail but, still is a whole new can of worms. A new era means new technology. He could project his investigation, if they even deserve to be called that, through a wire
