Abigail accused innocent people so she was not accused of these crimes. One of the many people she accused was Goody Proctor because Elizabeth fired her when she found out about the affair between Abigail and her husband. She told John Proctor, “she is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold sniveling women…” (Miller 22). Abigail tried to prove to John Proctor that she was good and pure, she wants him to believe that she would never do anything forbidden in Salem and gave examples of other people in the town to show comparison to herself. She said this in order for the court to blame Goody Proctor and not Abigail. Abigail also showed throughout the play that she is selfish and only looked out for her needs. For example, she said to the other girls, “let either of you, or the edge of a word, about the things, and I will bring a pointy reckoning that’ll shudder you” (Miller 19).
