In the play the Crucible John Proctor in a way accuses himself of witchery. Instead of denying everything that was happening he began shouting that god is dead and that he was possessed by the devil himself. This was very unexpected. John Proctor would not have done this if Abigail williams wasn’t a liar about seeing the devil in the courtroom or everything else that she did to make all the people in town believe that the devil was real and trying to posses her. He also could not live with the fact that Elizabeth is refusing to confess to his crime of adultery with Abigail Williams. Instead he takes it upon himself to tell tell Elizabeth that he would rather die with her love, forgiveness and the truth and also knowing that he would not have lost his name and reputation. Elizabeth knows that he is a good man and him confessing was his way of saying that he was sorry for his sin of adultery with Abigail Williams, but she still can’t seem to confess. It is not until John decides to tear up his confession of lies that was going to be posted on the church doors that he also decides to pull Elizabeth aside to apologize for his sin of adultery and his confession of witchery that is a lie.
