He falls into a bad position and has no way to get himself out of it without lying. His actions are sometimes accredited to The Salem Witch Trials and how they began. Proctor uses his life to better himself without thinking of the consequences for others. He eventually confesses to what actually happened with Abigail when his wife in threatened by the outcome, and later admits he is not a witch, causing him to be seen as a tragic hero. He does not know that all the events in his life will eventually cause his terrible death, but when this fact is brought about to him, he eventually knows that he must die. Although he is a noble man and did not actually do anything wrong, the series of events based on his actions caused an ending that many thought he deserved. John’s choices throughout the play have ultimately led to his downfall, and that is the true definition of a tragic
