The Crucible Quotations
John Proctor is arguing with Abigail Williams, because Abigail is trying to have a relationship with John Proctor but John refuses to be with her again. The quotation reveals that Abigail is trying to force John to be in a relationship with her again. John is appalled and infuriated by this because he has a wife of his own named Elizabeth. John Proctor explains to Abigail that he would rather cut his own hand off than to be with Abigail. Miller is suggesting that there are people out in the world who will do anything to rekindle their love even when it’s impossible. This happens a lot with men because they think they can spark the relationship back up when the other person that they love is already with someone else.

According to gradesaver, the quotation means that the environment that Elizabeth has created in the house is as “cold as ice”. Proctor is reflecting on Elizabeth’s attitude since she found out about Proctor’s affair with Abigail. Even though they haven’t separated, Elizabeth certainly is not willing to forget what Proctor has done in the past. Miller is suggesting that people don’t tend to forget or forgive others so easily when they cheated with them. Miller says that it’s hard to trust that they won’t do it again. Yahoo answers states that, Proctor is being accused of witchcraft even though he 's been against it since the beginning of the trails. We see that he soon breaks and starts spitting out nonsense to Danforth and the court. During the whole witch trail Proctor has been trying to get others to tell the truth, but he has avoided telling the truth himself. Finally when Proctor tells the truth to everyone in the court, no one believes him at all. This just made Proctor even more insane because he finally realized the fate that was coming to him. Miller suggests that there are certain people just can’t admit that they are wrong. They insist that the other person’s justification is wrong and that theirs is right. These types of people do this because they feel as if they are right and that everything they do is correct and perfect. A perfect example of this would be a cop because they think that they are always right and some may think that they are above the law. Cops feel that they know every single law but, sometimes regular citizens may know more than a regular cop. This is true in some cases where the cop was wrong for pulling a citizen aside.

In Act 2 Elizabeth confronts rumors and suspicion that Abigail wants to kill her and aims to replace her place as John Proctor's wife. The Author of this article, David Palmer also sees this and further analyses their discussion, "The first detailed discussion of the adultery and its effect on Proctor's sense of self is at the beginning of act 2, and the problem here is Proctor's confusion concerning differences between regret, guilt, and shame. At first, Proctor seems to have wanted to view his act as a merely regrettable event… That seems to be what he means when he means when he says to Elizabeth that he made no promise in his sexual engagement with Abigail... he was overcome by lust; that happens to people occasionally; it is unimportant"(Palmer 32-33).…
