The first meaning is a purification of metals. A container is used to melt down metals by using extreme heat, which separates the valuable metals from the less valuable metals. It also means a situation where someone is tested severely, a difficult test of life. The title of Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible is symbolic of both of these terms. In Act 1 of The Crucible, Abigail Williams was the person most responsible for the chaotic historical witchcraft situation in Salem.
Abigail Williams was the person who was most responsible for the riotous situation in Salem. In the play The Crucible, Abigail’s cousin Betty exclaimed, “‘You drank blood, Abby! … You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! … ‘“ (1097). Betty reveals that other than dancing, Abby also drank blood in the woods. She drank blood to hopefully kill John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. Abby does this because she had an affair with John Proctor and wanted to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor. She was jealous of her and wanted her gone. Therefore one of the main reasons they danced in the woods in the first place was so she can try to find a way to get rid of Elizabeth. As described in The Crucible, “Reverend Parris is praying now… but his daughter does not stir on the bed.” (1092) and what Abby has claimed, “ … Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it.” (1093). Betty was in the woods with Abby, and she fainted because of how scared she got when her father caught them. If she did not faint, and then pretended to be unconsciousness, they would not have been questioned as much about witchcraft. It would have prevented everyone from questioning them and spreading around the rumors. Reverend Parris could have seen it as the girls just dancing in the woods. Towards the end of act 1 in The Crucible, Betty exclaimed, “‘I saw George Jacobs with the Devil! I saw Goody Howe with the Devil!’” (1111). After Abby accused people, Betty joined in and accused a lot of people too. Accusing many people caused the confusion and uproar in Salem. Betty did this to protect herself from getting punished. This point of view seems plausible at first but Abigail Williams is still the person most responsible for the lawless and crazy witchcraft situation in Salem. Although Betty did pretend to be unconsciousness in bed and did faint in the woods, Abby was the who somehow convinced the girls to go with her into the woods. She got them to go for her own selfish reasons, as said before, to use
