John Proctor was one of them. Reverend Hale advised John to confess to witchcraft to save himself from being hanged. Proctor decided to confess in order to save himself, after putting things into perspective, like his children and wife. Judge Danforth insisted John to sign his name as a true confession. John refused to do so. He stated, “You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs...Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!”(133) After his verbal confession, John had an epiphany. He realized that he could not lie to save his life. He wanted nothing more than to live out his life with his family, but his integrity wouldn’t let him do such a thing. His refusal to sign his name is something that is extremely admirable in many ways. Towards the end of the story, there are many characters who are hanged for witchcraft. After being accused, one would expect to be hanged,unless confessing to the nonsense. John Proctor portrays this message very clearly: it is better to die with integrity than live with a lie. When John refused to sign his name he said, “Let them that never lied die now to keep their souls”(126). This refusal to sign, is a definite example of dying with integrity. He would rather be hanged while keeping his good name for his virtue, than to live because of an untruthful confession. This message was well portrayed through John’s
