The Dangers Of Women In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” is a dramatized and partially fictionalized play that was written in 1953. It is a partially fictionalized play based off of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1992 to 1993. I see Miller’s play as somewhat laughable due to the over exaggerations thats the girls go through when trying to accuse someone as a witch. Miller wrote this play to expose the dangers of judging people with different mindsets or beliefs. Miller portrayed that such illogical reasoning is dangerous and counterproductive. When looking at the motives of the two main women, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor, you can see how both women represent something much larger. Miller presents us with …show more content…
She is very much unlike Abigail in almost every way. Even though her husband has cheated on her she still has faith in him and she still loves him. When her husband blows up on her and exclaims that his house is like a court because he is always judged she only has this to say: “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man.” Elizabeth shows patience and forgiveness, she does not condone her husbands cheating but she doesn 't judge him for it either. Instead of being similar to Abigail and throwing a lot over the fact that her husband cheated she waits patiently for John to forgive himself and for them to work it out. Abigail is seen as evil and Elizabeth as good, but in a way they do have a similarity. The only view into how Elizabeth actually felt arises from a conversation that took place in the last meeting between her and John before he was sentenced to death: “I have read my heart this three month, John. I have sins of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lechery. … I counted myself so plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come to me! Suspicion kissed you when I did; I never knew how I should say my love. It were a cold house I kept.” She the deeper reason as to why they had a strained marriage in shown, Elizabeth was unhappy with herself and saw herself as pain and unloveable. This is how she and Abigail could be seen as similar, due to the fact that Abigail, driven by fear, thought that if she didn 't take matters into her own hands she would end up unhappy and alone. Ultimately Abigail realizes, too late, that she was loved and could be loved for who she was. Elizabeth also realizes that the one she loved was who she ended up condemning to death so she ran away to escape the heartache and pain of rejection and

However Elizabeth differs from Abigail. When looking at Elizabeth through the archetypal lens she reveals the archetype of the lover. A particular example of this is when Elizabeth was asked about her husband 's affairs. Elizabeth first starts to tell the court what happened; however later when asked specifically about the affair she responds, “My husband-is a goodly man, sir” (III). She is a lover because she is Proctor 's wife and even though he has been unfaithful, she has that mentality that Proctor is the one and only guy that she will stand by.…

Ranging from producing fake stories, to purposely harming herself to manipulate others, Abigail constantly insists in taking down Elizabeth and ruining her name. She clearly has a feeling of disgust toward Elizabeth, and mentions multiple times throughout the story her hatred for Elizabeth. For example, Abigail states “It's a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!” (11). Not only does Abigail assert her feelings toward Elizabeth, but she calls Elizabeth “it”, a quite disrespectful way to address a woman.…
