When thrown into a fiction story the reader becomes captivated with stories of witches, ghosts, and conflicts. However, in every story there is an alternative motive along with some truth. In the novel The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, it dives deep into the past describing the town of Salem and the Salem witch trials. The story exhibits a young girl named Abigail and her fight to gain her enemy Elizabeth’s husband, going as far as to call her and others a witch. The Crucible has many diverse themes, some being jealousy, reputation, and authority. These themes can be find in almost every novel. For example, it’s found in The Piano Lesson by August Wilson. A person’s reputation determines who they are and what they do, although it may not always be accurate considering everyone has different beliefs. In The Crucible a person 's reputation describes how rich, and how respected they are. When Proctor wants to confess the truth about Abigail never seeing witchcraft, he hesitates. “I am only wondering how I may prove what she told me, Elizabeth. If the girl’s a saint now, I think it is not easy to prove she’s fraud, and the town gone so silly. She told it to me in a room alone-I have no proof for it” (Miller 51). Proctor realizes nobody will believe his word over Abigail’s because now she is seen as a saint, and has a higher reputation than he does. In The Piano Lesson reputation is show when Lymon wants to look rich to get a girl. The girls in the book only wanted rich men, so Wining Boy helped Lymon create the illusion of having a high reputation. Wining Boy states, “That’s a fifty-five-dollar suit. That’s the kind of suit the bigshots wear. You need a pistol and a pocketful of money to wear that suit. I’ll let you have it for three dollars. The women will fall out their windows they see you in a suit like that” (Wilson 60). The illusion of Lymon having a high reputation consisted of wearing a richs man suit and looking like he had money.
