Throughout the entire play of The Crucible the power shifted between many people. Some will say Paris held the power in the beginning of the play because of his commanding personality towards people. Later on in the play the power shifts to Abigail Williams. Abigail was a seventeen year old girl who controlled how everything went down. From excusing multiple women and children of witchcraft and her affair with John Proctor. In the end, Abigail was responsible for the twenty people who were executed because of her accusations. Now, many still to this day debate on the topic of who held the power at the end of The Crucible. I believe John Proctor was the holder of all the power at the end of The Crucible because he sacrificed his life knowing he did not commit witchcraft, his relationship with Abigail Williams, and his power with Elizabeth Proctor.
John Proctor sacrificed his life instead of living. He left his life, his wife who was pregnant and his two other children. John was making a point that he was not going to give in and admit to doing something he had nothing to do with. If he would of lived he would of been powerless, disliked, and judged by many. John tells Elizabeth, "Give them no tear. Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!” (Act IV. 144). Before John was executed he explained to the Elizabeth that he would not confess a lie in order to live. He says, “Would give them such a lie? Say it. Would you ever give them this? You…
