When people refused to answer questions in the crucible, they were automatically assumed to be witches. Reverend Hale comes to the Proctors to discuss the accusations of Elizabeth in the court, but it some becomes a heated discussion about why people are admitting to being witches. John proctor exclaims "And why not, if they must hang for denying it?"(Miller 1243).John is referring to how if a person in Salem denies being a witch, they are hung for it. But if they admit to being a witch they can be reborn and continue on with their lives even if they only admitted to being a witch to avoid the gallows. Arthur Miller faced the same issue when he refused to answer questions in court about his accusation of being a communist. During an interview with Arthur miller that revealed what made him right the crucible and also how he related to it, he stated "I was found guilty of communism for refusing to answer several questions"(Unknown). Because miller didn’t answer these questions he was automatically declared a communist. Lying and communism are both considered flaws to most people. Many people lied during the witch trials in order to save their lives. Does this make them smart or flawed? Miller refused to answer questions about other people accused of communism in order to possibly keep them safe. He took the title of being flawed all to help
