In Act One we read that Mary says, “Abby, we’ve got to telll. Witchery’s a hanging’ error, a hangin’ like they done in Boston two year ago! We must tell the truth, Abby! You’ll only be whipped for dancin’, and the other things!” page 19. Mary prefers to be whipped than to die for the things they did; however, Abigail refuses. She directs herself to all the girls and threatens them not to tell, “I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” page 20. In Act Two, John Proctor tells Mary Warren that she will confess, but she refuses. “I cannot charge murder on Abigail.” “She’ll kill me for sayin’ that!” “I cannot, they’ll turn on me-” The scene ends with Mary sobbing and repeating the words, “I cannot, I cannot, I cannot.” These are just a few examples of how afraid the girls (specifically Mary Warren) are afraid of Abigail. Finally, in Act 3, Mary Warren tries to confess but Abigail starts acting like she’s sending her soul out. The narration reads, “Abigail, with a weird, wild, chilling cry, screams up to the ceiling.” This is followed by Abigail saying, “You will not! Begone! Begone, I say.” She claims to see a yellow bird which is Mary’s soul and eventually all the girls join in. In Act One, Abigail is on the verge of getting caught but then she blames everything on Tituba. Hale asks if Abigail called the devil and she responds with, “I never called him! Tituba, Tituba...” page 42. Later on, in Act Three, she manipulates Danforth. He tries to get her to confess and Abigail starts telling him about all the times she was hurt. “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-” page 108. She keeps talking and finally acts like Mary is sending her soul out through a yellow bird which causes Danforth to believe Abigail instead of Mary and Proctor.
